Mental Health First Aid Course
Assist adults that may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis is resolved
Course Overview
The EmployEase mental health first aid course will provide learning and insights on how to assist an adult experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis is resolved.
The mental health first aid course has been developed with rigorous clinical research and is based on guidelines developed in conjunction with the University of Melbourne’s Population Mental Health Group and consultation with people with lived experience of mental health conditions.
Undertaking mental health first aid training will guide you in supporting family members, friends, co-workers, and even yourself through a mental health crisis. In Australia, the conversation and support around mental health can still be stigmatised due to lack of education. This course is suitable for anyone who lacks knowledge and understanding and wants to develop skills and expertise in approaching someone in need of support.
Learning outcomes
There are several key learning outcomes from undertaking the mental health first aid course, including:
- Improve your knowledge of mental health conditions, treatments and first aid strategies
- Gain confidence in providing support to a person experiencing a mental health condition
- De-stigmatise mental health issues and share your knowledge
- Support a family member or friend
- Make a difference in your community
- Provide support to colleagues in your workplace
- Small groups, interactive activities
The mental health first aid course will provide you with critical knowledge to de-escalate a crisis, identify those suffering in silence and overall confidence in providing support.
Who should enrol in the mental health first aid course?
The course is ideal for anyone in the workforce or otherwise who feels they lack knowledge in mental health issues and the types of support required. Here is a list of people or circumstances that signify enrichment in taking the course.
- Management Position – If you are in a management position in the workplace, it is crucial to consider the well-being of your employees. Having mental health first aid training under your belt can provide confidence in approaching someone at work struggling with mental health issues or going through a sudden life change.
- Parent – All people, particularly young adults and teenagers, face daily challenges that can develop into mental health issues. It is important to be educated and prepared to handle these situations as your child experiences new emotions.
- Teachers – A teacher’s responsibility does not require providing mental health support to a student. However, being the first point of contact in identifying signs of suffering can help. Schools have access to counsellors further to provide support and treatment to students in need, but teachers are the people who see students every day in their classroom and can pick on changes and patterns in behaviour.

- No judgment listening – the course teaches people to destigmatise mental health by refraining from judgement and to practice active listening.
- Creating connections – the training also teaches the importance of creating connections with people and getting down to the human level for those who are feeling vulnerable.
