This course provides the skills and knowledge required to safely prepare for and provide support to clients requiring assistance with medication or assistance to self-medicate. The course is relevant to carers and support workers currently working in aged care or disability support settings with authority in their state or territory to provide assistance with medication administration.

Participants successfully completing this course will receive a Statement of Attainment for HLTHPS006 Assist clients with medication which is a nationally recognised unit of competency.

Course pre-requisites

This course is open to aged care and disability support workers who have a minimum Certificate III qualification in either sector. In addition, participants must have at least 3 months of relevant and current work experience in aged care or disability support which can be verified by their current employer or references from previous employment.

All participants must attend a Pre-Training Review which includes an interview and a language, literacy and numeracy assessment to determine eligibility to enrol in the course.

All participants must have a current National Police check clear of any disclosures to undertake this course.

Course structure and assessment

Theory – Upon successful enrollment, participants will be sent a comprehensive workbook and link to our online campus where you can access further resources and the theory assessment. Approximately 10 – 20 hours of self-directed learning will be required in order to successfully complete the theory assessment.

The theory assessment must be submitted no later than 10 days prior to your practical training date. A Course Handbook will be available at your Pre-Training Review with further information about the theory assessment.

Practical workshop – On successful completion of the theory assessment, participants must attend a 2-day workshop. This involves a review of the knowledge attained during your self-directed learning and a series of practical activities such as preparation of different forms of medication, using medication documentation and mock medication rounds. A practical simulation assessment is undertaken during this workshop.

Work Placement

Participants must complete a four-hour work placement where they will assist clients with medication administration.

Participants are strongly encouraged to undertake placement in their own workplace wherever possible. The workplace must have at least 5 clients who take at least 5 types of medications via oral, topical or inhaled routes of administration.

If participants are unable to source their own placement, EmployEase can organise on your behalf with one of our aged care residential partners. During your work placement, you will be fully supervised by a staff member as well as an EmployEase trainer and assessor who is a Registered or Enrolled Nurse.

If a participant is not successful at their first placement attempt, one further attempt is permitted. If EmployEase has organised the placement, a $100 re-booking fee will be payable.

Work placement must be completed no later than 30 days after attendance at the practical training workshop. All components of the course are compulsory and must be completed to gain a Statement of Attainment.

  • The cost of the course is a special introductory price of $450 per person payable on enrolment
  • A $100 re-booking fee is required if the participant needs to re-book class or placement dates.
  • A payment plan is available (Additional fees applies.)
